Put together with lots of love this event builds on the tradition of celebrating and “bramming” throughout communities in Belize but especially those of the Kriol(Creole) villages.
In the past revelers would traverse the streets during Christmas going from house to house singing and dancing in the street. One of the other interesting aspects of the celebration was the pulsating rhythms of traditional Brokdong music. Instruments would include the jawbone of an ass(donkey), fork and grater, the Gombay drum, mouth organ and the accordion to name a few. Synonymous with Brokdong music is the call and response songs narrating stories of the past in oftentimes in a fun and satirical fashion.
Corozal Cultural Christ Bram looks at promoting the Kriol culture alongside many of the other cultures in Corozal to create an evening of fun and entertainment. The event promises presentations from groups representing the Kriols, Garifuna, Mestizo, East Indian, and Mayas.
Another aspect of the evening will be sharing of traditional stories which were characteristics of the season. These stories carried with them specials messages which safeguarded the transition and transmission from one generation to the next.
Last but not least is the Taste of Corozal Competition which looks at promoting the safeguard of our culinary traditions to include the famous Belizean Black Cake, Rompopo and Patitas Ceviche!
The event is set to take place on the Sunday before Christmas December 23rd at 5:00pm. It promises to be a fun family event for everyone rich in Belizean culture and traditions.
